A Statement from the MEANYC Executive Board

MEANYC is an association that supports teachers and students who live in historically marginalized neighborhoods and identify as the global majority. Our members have built thriving music programs in these communities. As such, we were appalled to learn that NYSSMA®, an association we partner with and are an affiliate of, would publish a session title that insults the teachers, students, and families we serve.

We are calling on NYSSMA® to 1) explain what happens to a session from the proposal through the print process and 2) share a concrete plan that lists action steps including, but not limited to, yearly DEI training for all NYSSMA® Officers and office staff to make sure that this never happens again.
